6B8C: Room data - creatures
Table indicating which creatures are in which room.
Each of the the 212 standard rooms (but not the vertically scrolling tunnel rooms, numbers 224 to 255) has a single byte indicating which creatures it contains.
  • There are 4 types of creature that can move from room to room - (1) goblin warrior, (2) goblin missile throwers, (3) guardians of chaos and (4) wraiths
  • Each room can hold a maximum total of 3 creatures (any combination of creature type)
  • This allows a room's creature data to be stored within a single byte. Bits that are set indicate the type/number of creatures
  • Some room data indicates the room has more than 3 creatures. However, the max creatures-per-room is 3, so only 3 will appear at once (see Bugs: Too many creatures in a room)
  • Demons and Warlocks are dealt with separately (though they adhere to the max-creatures-per-room limit). Other ad hoc room creatures such as spiders, bats and scorpions are dealt with and stored as room objects (see 736F)
The bits within the room byte tell us the creature types and numbers in the room:

When Maroc moves room, the routine at DA0A copies the byte holding the creatures in the room he's leaving (EBB7) into the relevant spot in this table.
